Students use real field data to investigate the relatedness of eight individual lemurs to discover whether or not a particular species previously thought extinct is actually still alive. They will analyse morphological data and use gel electrophoresis to decide if the extinct species is actually extant.
Students analyse a range of organic salts/compounds in water, using various techniques: UV Visible spectroscopy, High Pressure Liquid Chromatography and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.
This program explores the use chemical instruments used to separate and measure specific properties – GS-MS, HPLC-DAD, FT-IR and NMR.
An incursion opportunity, in partnership with OzGrav, learners explore concepts of space, including gravity, blackholes and radiation. A completely immersive VR Experience.
An investigation into resonance and standing waves
Thomas Young’s double slit experiment forms a key piece in the acceptance of the wave model of light as highlighted in the Physics study design but what is the evidence? In this program we will use experimental data from water waves to show the basis of Young’s premise for predicting the behaviour of waves and then apply this to investigation how diffraction and interference of light can be applied to predict fringe patterns or calculate wavelengths.
Australian Synchrotron Science Education Programs
Swinburne University’s PRIMESCI! team offers a suite of high-impact, hands-on science programs hosted at the world‑class ANSTO Australian Synchrotron in Clayton. These programs give students rare access to advanced scientific equipment and real-world applications of physics and chemistry, delivered by specialist science educators.
