Introduction

Using the STELR renewable energy kit, students will experiment and design a wind turbine that is able to efficiently produce high energy output using blade length as the variable. Students will first learn about the principles of wind energy and how wind turbines work. They will then design and build their own wind turbines using the STELR kit. Students will test their wind turbines in a wind tunnel and measure the amount of energy they produce. They will then analyze their data and make design changes to their wind turbines in order to improve their efficiency.

Through this experiment, students will gain a hands-on understanding of wind energy and how to design and build wind turbines. They will also develop important STEM skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and design thinking.

Program Overview

The KIOSC program designed is for one experiment where students investigate how many blades and what length of blade should an efficient wind turbine have. There is more scope to go beyond this single activity using the Teacher and Student resources from STELR.
