Introduction

Students will explore the intersection of technology and creativity by designing and building their own musical instruments using Makey Makey circuits and Scratch coding. They will learn the fundamentals of electricity and circuitry, along with the basics of programming, to create interactive and engaging musical experiences.

Program Overview

This program explores technology and engineering designs:

           1. Circuits, Design and Code

Students analyse Makey Makey circuits and Scratch programming. They understand how crocodile clips, conductors, and the Makey Makey board generate electrical signals. They also learn about Scratch blocks like “when clicked” and “play sound” and how they control digital actions. By combining these, students discover how Makey Makey and Scratch create musical sounds.

2. MakeBlock Laser

Students explore the fundamental principles of laser cutting and engraving, understanding how lasers interact with materials to create precise cuts and intricate designs. They prioritise safety by familiarising themselves with essential precautions and procedures when operating the Makeblock Laser Cutter. Through hands-on projects, students apply their knowledge to design and create unique pieces, skillfully incorporating laser cutting and engraving techniques to bring their ideas to life.

3. Making Music

Students will create a unique musical instrument using Makey Makey and various conductive materials. They will assign specific musical sounds to different Makey Makey inputs using Scratch coding. To further enhance their musical composition, students will design and implement a Scratch program that controls the tempo, pitch, and rhythm of the generated music. This interactive project will allow students to explore the intersection of technology and creativity, fostering their musical expression and programming skills.
