9 Mathematics: Illuminated Transformational Design

Introduction

In this project, students will delve into the intersection of mathematics, technology, science and design to create captivating interactive light display. They will apply transformational math concepts to design and laser-cut intricate patterns on acrylic sheets, transforming them into vibrant canvases for light manipulation. Utilizing the power of coding, students will program LED light strips to cascade through a spectrum of colours and strobing patterns, imbuing their designs with dynamism and visual allure. The interplay of light and colour reflected through the laser-cut acrylic will create mesmerizing effects that captivate the eye and ignite the imagination.

NOTE: Students must have access to their Adobe Education logins. Please see your IT staff for access.

Program Overview

Students will work through a series of workshops to complete their Illuminated Transformational Designs.

Workshop 1: Transformations

Students will:

  • Identify the characteristics of enlarged shapes and objects, such as changes in size, angles, and proportions.
  • Describe the process of enlarging shapes and objects using various methods, such as physical manipulation, drawing, and digital tools (Adobe Illustrator)
Workshop 2: Adobe and Design

Students will:

  • Learn skills in using Adobe Illustrator design features
  • Create their transformational artefacts and upload for rendering and cutting.
Workshop 3: Circuits and Code

Students will:

  • Be introduced to concepts of circuits and basic ‘blink’ Arduino code
  • Explain the principles of coding and programming, using a microcontroller programming language – Arduino
  • Demonstrate how to connect LED light strips to microcontrollers and control their color and brightness using code.
  • Be guided in writing code to create different color patterns and strobing effects for their LED light strips.

Please note the following:

  • This program works best if students use their own Adobe accounts. For DE schools this means they will need their schools.vic.edu.au email address already set up prior to arriving at KIOSC for session one.
  • Students will receive their completed projects 1-2 weeks after the KIOSC lesson, so KIOSC can cut their designs.
  • See the attached file to assist your school IT department.
  • Adobe Accounts
