Introduction

Retro TECH Arcade is an innovative program designed to immerse students in the interdisciplinary realm of game development. By engaging with the historical context of classic arcade games, participants will utilise cutting-edge technologies to design, construct, and program unique gaming experiences. The program fosters the development of essential 21st-century skills, including CAD design proficiency, engineering, and micro:bit coding. Through a workshop-based, hands-on approach, learners will explore the synthesis of design principles, technological applications, and creative problem-solving, culminating in the realisation of playable artefacts.

Program Overview

Explore technology and engineering designs in 2 x 90 minute workshops.

Circuit Golf Arcade: 

Provides a hands-on learning experience in which students utilise a micro:bit controller to programmatically guide a virtual golf ball through a simulated obstacle course. This workshop integrates principles of algorithmic logic with game mechanics, challenging participants to develop solutions for navigating spatial constraints and achieving defined objectives. Students will engage with coding concepts, problem-solving strategies, and iterative design processes (coding and physical design) to successfully complete the course.

In Laser Board Arcade:

Students will engage in the design and prototyping of a hybrid arcade game.  Participants will utilise CAD software to conceptualise and develop a novel game that merges elements of cornhole and basketball into a cohesive desktop experience.  This workshop emphasises the integration of digital design tools with hands-on creativity, fostering an understanding of design principles and the iterative development process.
